Background
The entity that became known as Project Alcatraz was born, if such a term is even applicable, as a reality that itself had sentience. It infinitely created and destroyed whatever "thoughts" it had as physical manifestations to keep itself occupied. Eventually, it became aware of other realities, and sought to gain entrance into them. It decimated many other universes before it arrived in an ancient version of our own reality. It attempted to assimilate our world into itself, as it had with many others... but one thing was different here. This world had mages and an understanding of mystical forces.
Much in the way that the Midnight Squad trapped Rularuu in the Shadow Shard, these ancient mystics were able to confine this sentient universe into a bodily form and then cast it into a reality that would serve as its prison for all eternity.
The Project
A group of scientists lead by Dr. Douglas Grant at Portal Corp. (funded by Crey) has begun to map all of the realities that they can reach via their proprietary technology. Among these many realities is the one in which the entity was imprisoned, and it was giving off an incredible amount energy. A group of scientists thought that this dimension might be able to be used as a source of energy for Paragon. Of course what they didn't know was what was inside... and that the energy that was being created was the entity trying to escape.
Project Alcatraz, as the initiative was codenamed, began in earnest. And as the project got underway it seemed to be going well. However, after all the machinery was set up, and the lead scientist flipped the switch to start energy collection, everything went horribly wrong.
The entity that had been trapped in an alternate reality had been given a direct path into the body of that lead scientist, and it seized that opportunity willingy. It took no time at all for it to rip his mind in twain and take over his body. The scientist was able to speak one final message to the recording equipment before the entity cemented full control and killed everyone else in the lab and escaped the facility to attempt to destroy this reality as well.
It took a form that the scientist found horrifying, and took to calling itself Project Alcatraz.
