Overview
He knew.
Claude Erichsson knew that playing with magic and demonic energies was dangerous. But, the allure and prospect of summoning a real demon - asking it questions, gaining some limited power, or even (perhaps) binding it - was too great to pass up. The ancient ritual he happened upon seemed legitimate, as did the ensorcelled binding chains he could use to wrap the demon and contain its powers.
And the ritual went well, all elements were executed and observed carefully, and the demon appeared. It was shocking and thrilling. It was a being wrapped in a living darkness and elemental charges of energy snapped about it. It was angry, or seemed so, and yet quiet and cunning in attempts to break free. It even commented on the 'opportunity' presented by being drawn to Earth.
Erich has never determined what went wrong... did he break the summoning circle somehow? Did he foul one of the incantations? Did one of the candles go out?
The demon was upon him in an instant, the insane cackle an echo throughout his home and upon his ears... and then within his ears as the demon passed into his being to take control and gain a permanent foothold on this Earth.
Claude panicked. He could feel himself being absorbed into the mystic entity now within his being. Wracked in the pain and agony of warping taint, he fell upon the magical chain he had prepared to bind the demon. He wrapped himself in the chains. In his head a dreadful wailing battered and echoed within his skull. Through the screaming and the scratching within his skull he tried to remember the binding spell and muttered what he could. He locked the chain about his waist with a padlock and through the key within one of the incense braziers, calling upon charmed fire to melt and destroy the key beyond use.
The demon eventually subsided, but Claude could feel it lurking... anticipating... waiting.
It was weeks before the panicked and frightened Claude discovered that he could draw upon the demon's power. A slight call, a thought, and electrical energy would crackle about his body or darkness could form about his hands to give him strength. He found himself using this to save some citizens from simple gang members, and then broke up some criminal enterprises. He decided to be a hero: that he, fettered by his chains, and with access to the demon within could attempt to atone for the danger he had placed upon the world by calling up the demon. A hero.
Over time though, the penalty for calling upon the demon's power became evident. Claude began to look less and less human, with permanent demonic features in evidence. And in battle, or times of stress, when Claude called more fully upon the power of the demon he would transform - appearing as if the demon itself.
He had found like minded comrades at Makepeace Manor, however, and the encouraged him to remain brave and true.
But the demon whispered inside his brain... it had a name - Sauriel - and it whispered... offering more reknown, more glory, and greater power.
Every time Fettyr stood against a foe and called upon the energies with Claude... Every time, Sauriel laughed and offered more... a drumbeat, a constant din of temptation.
Claude knew he was losing his struggle. Sauriel was going to subdue his will and gain dominance. This feeling went beyond normal exhaustion from the constant struggle. It became a certain knowledge that he was walking a path leading to villainy and evil - it was only a matter of time.
Current Status
Then a band of intrepid heroes called upon the aid of Fettyr in a critical task for Statesman. Claude was cautious, to call upon the demon's energies so intensely may finally tip the scales against him in conflict. But Claude steeled his heroic hear, and Fettyr accepted. The battle did indeed draw upon him as much, and more, than he had anticipated. At the end, Fettyr was called upon to face Lord Recluse himself when a comrade in arms could not survive the challenge. Erich reached deep and shaped Sauriel's power with resolution and determination. In the end... they won the day! Claude left Grandville with a calm confidence he had not felt since that fateful day his invocation had gone awry... Somehow, bending Sauriel's powers to his need with such resolution had not only tipped the scales in Claude's favor, it had defeated the will of Sauriel. Claude and Fettyr were forever to be Hero.
Sauriel lurks- likely biding his chance - but recently, Fettyr placed his feet firmly on a path to further strengthen his abilities and gain incarnate status.
His story continues to be written.
