Affiliations

Danica King is a student with Squadron X (Virtue Supergroups). She was also involved with a secret and highly illegal mutant experimentation program called Protocol X (Virtue Supergroups), although her involvement was involuntary and against her will. As such, Danica is very determined to bringing those responsible to their knees.

Backstory

Danica King grew up as an orphan in Paragon City, spending her childhood in a Crey Industries sponsored foster care program. When Danica's mutant ability to manipulate and project electricity began to develop in early adolescence her foster parents arranged for her to be enrolled in a special program for young mutants. This program was the Duchesne Institute for the Advanced Development and Education of Mutants or DIADEM (Virtue Supergroups). Although DIADEM officially presents itself as an institute where young mutants can learn to develop their powers safely for the benefit of all Mankind, Danica claims that the school is really a front operation for a program called Protocol X. This illegal program was designed to use mutants as living test subjects so the true source of their genetic abilities could be identified, extracted, and duplicated. According to Danica, DIADEM and the foster care program sponsored by Crey Industries was simply a means of quietly securing mutant test subjects for Protocol X.

Danica's life became a nightmare, and she realized that she had been betrayed since her birth. Her carefully selected foster families knew full well that Danica would likely become a mutant, and that her entire life had been planned for her. Danica was held as a prisoner somewhere within the vicinty of Paragon City in a secret laboratory, reduced to nothing more than a sedated lab rat waiting to be dissected and slaughtered for the advancement of someone's insane research. For several years Danica fell asleep to the dying screams of many young mutants like herself echoing through the corridor beyond her cell, and she resigned herself over to her fate.

When her time came Danica was not planning to escape. She was heavily sedated and placed onto a table where she was to be surgically opened and picked apart, but something went wrong. Although the drugs prevented Danica from generating electricity using her own body, they did little to prevent her instincts from taking over. The surgical tools and machinery were powered by electrical currents, and Danica unwittingly overloaded them with a powerful EMP burst that shut down the entire laboratory. The charge of electricity through her body helped her to diminish the effects of the drugs within her, and Danica burst from the table and made her escape. She doesn't recall much of her flight from the underground facility other than that she knows she electrocuted several doctors, scientists, and security personnel in her instinctive panic.

Danica eventually recovered and made her way to Kings Row, where she was tracked down by agents of GIFT. Although it took some convincing, Danica was very reluctant to join with GIFT due to her experiences with Protocol X. Antonio Nash assured Danica that she would never be harmed by them, and that they would help her to bring those responsible for kidnapping her and murdering an unknown number of mutant children to justice. Realizing that working with GIFT was the best chance she had at seeking her own brand of revenge, Danica agreed to accept the refuge that GIFT offered.

Danica has since enrolled in Squadron X (Virtue Supergroups) and is for the first time in a long time learning how to trust others. Unlike the other students who are still teenagers, somewhat immature, and innocently optimistic about life, Danica has a much darker personality and is prone to sudden mood swings and neurotic episodes. The fact that several other students were also orphans like her, namely Hyperjack, Suttee, and Ironbound, has helped Danica to cope better with her situation.

Powers

Electrical Blasts

Danica is a living dynamo of electrical energy. Unlike some mutants who draw electrical energy from the atmosphere, Danica can generate electrical charges and currents directly from subatomic particles within her body. Using these currents, Danica can project blasts of electrical energy across long distances. Danica's potential has yet to be fully determined, but the young mutant has already displayed the capacity to generate as much as 1 gigavolt, or the approximate voltage level of a bolt of lightning. Against living targets Danica has demonstrated an ability to reduce the voltage levels to below 50 volts; it is at 50 volts or higher when living targets can suffer tissue burns and damage, heart failure, or electrocution. The only known limit to Danica's ability to generate electricity appears to be her own endurance and stamina. Although she cannot be damaged by the electrical currents that she generates, Danica does become exhausted and fatigued after prolonged periods of generating electrical charges.

Electrical Manipulation

Danica can also manipulate electromagnetic fields, creating electrical phenomenon in the atmosphere and around targets and objects at will. Danica has used this ability to cause powerful electromagnetic bursts around her to short out electrical equipment. She is able to sustain fields of electrical energy around her as well, making it extremely painful for living targets to approach or remain close to her for long. Danica can also strike targets with powerful electrical shocks merely by touching them, or surround them in cages of electrical energy that hinder their movement while inflicting painful currents of electricity upon them.

Electroreception

Danica can instinctively sense electrical currents, allowing her to perceive her environment in low-light conditions. Danica achieves this by actively generating eletrical fields around her and detecting distortions in those fields that allow her to "see in the dark" and avoid being snuck up on most of the time, even by invisible or concealed targets. Danica can also passively sense the weak bioelectric fields generated by living animals, including humans, allowing her to detect where they may be even if they are concealed.
