Relavent History

Adolf Hitler's fascination with the occult is well-known, or at least frequently rumored. Unbeknownst to almost the entire world, Hitler had a number of ongoing research projects related to magic and its effects, many of which were being conducted in underground labs in Stuttgart. It was in one of these labs that a single scientist experimenting with the possibility of mixing magic with technology made an unprecidented breakthrough, fusing a magic-formed entity to a simple metal frame, which the being could move like a puppet.

Excited, the researcher attempted to conjure more complex beings, fused to better frames. Eventually, he created a creature that could form organic tissue around a solid steel frame. This creature was loyal to its creator to the point of willing slavery, and was named Samael Diener. Samael was trained in infantry combat and certain combative magics, as well as being taught to speak in several languages, including German, English, French, and Latin. Samael showed incredible resistance to averse conditions, as well as a talent for violence, and was pressed into the Nazi military soon after his creation.

Samael spent some time serving with both the Storm Corps and the SS, but was taken out of commission until after the end of the war when Statesman fought Samael during the Normandy Landings, and bent him backwards to the point that every joint in Samael's legs and spine were dislocated, and several of his metal bones were curved, requiring that most of Samael's skeleton be remade.

Samael later described Statesman as "a really impressive guy".

After the collapse of Nazi Germany, Samael and his creator fled the country to South America, where most of the remaining Nazi loyalists immediately set about establishing a foothold, with the intent of rising to power in the distant future.

In the summer of 2006, the last decendant of Samael's creator died under questionable circumstances. Samael, having spent decades in unwavering loyalty to that family, was utterly distraught. In desperation, he spent the better part of two weeks searching through every geneological record he could find before happening upon a forgotten offshoot of the family decended from a relative of Samael's creator who had left Germany for the United States in 1932. Samael immediately abandoned the hidden outpost that had been his home, and made his way to Rexburg, Idaho, where he found who he thought would be his new master. Details regarding his trip are sketchy, as Samael does not clearly remember what he does during the rare times when he is without a master.

Upon Samael's arrival in Rexburg, two problems presented themselves. First, his new master was clearly terrified of him. Second, there was virtually no use for someone of Samael's unique nature in a peaceful town like Rexburg. Fortunately, a solution to both was clear. The new master had a son, who had just become a Hero recently, and who could probably accept Samael's frightening nature, and use his combative prowess. The father decided that his son should be Samael's master, and Samael happily began the long hike to Paragon City, in search of his new master, Bitt Player.

Current Status

Samael is now a member of the Paragon Titans. He is Bitt Player's most reliable source of magic-related information and advice, being the only Titan with occult abilities to speak of. Samael is also the most violent of the Titans, and is extremely willing to cross any number of lines in pursuit of Bitt's definition of justice. As Samael was the first person to join the Titans after Bitt and Elaina Rhysenn founded the group, getting used to his personality is something of an initiation for new members.

Personality

Samael Diener is loyal to Bitt Player, to the point of obsession. He obeys every order, satisfies every request, and has had to be specifically ordered not to become belligerrent or even violent towards people who don't unquestioningly accept Bitt's word as law. This frustrates Bitt greatly, as Samael has virtually no free will. Samael does not understand right and wrong. He accepts Bitt's definitions of those concepts because Bitt is his master. On the upside, this means that Samael had no qualms about the switch from being a Nazi to gunning down Fifth Column members in the streets, but the problem is that Samael needs a very specific set of guidelines laid out by Bitt to keep him out of federal court, and adherence to such guidelines further tramples on Samael's free will.

Samael himself does wish to attain freedom of thought and action. However, he does not understand the concept of free will, and only wants to attain it because Bitt Player wants him to have it. The other Paragon Titans try to avoid thinking about this, as it makes them lose sleep.

Samael takes great joy in obeying Bitt's commands, especially when such commands involve combat. Recognizing this as a rare personal preference, Bitt has encouraged Samael to independently hunt down members of criminal organizations, an activity that consumes much of Samael's time. Samael speaks English with a very thick German accent, which some suspect is at least partially faked.

Another of Samael's actual likes is his apparent interest in modifying and upgrading his mechanical parts. He does all of this work himself, and rapidly regenerates the self-inflicted damage to his skin and bones afterwards.

Abilities

Samael's hearing and vision are well in excess of normal human abilities, as are his speed, agility and strength. However, with the exception of his jumping ability, -Samael can vault over 200 feet- none of these are truly super-human. Since Samael is an entity formed of magic around a metal frame, he does not need food or water, and does not breathe or sleep. Also, Samael does not feel pain. Even more impressive, Samael cannot be manipulated or coerced into doing anything that Bitt hasn't ordered. Thus, any attempt to bribe, blackmail, or plead with Samael will fail.

Samael also has an eclectic knowledge of arts magical, and some mechanical skills mostly related to maintaining and upgrading his technological components and custom rifle.

Euipment

Custom Multi-Munition Battlefield Rifle

Though it's called a "rifle", only one of its barrels is actually rifled, and fires .30 caliber rounds, with burst-fire and fully-automatic settings. This barrel is fed from a 30-round clip. The weapon also carries a smoothbore, bolt-action shotgun barrel suited for 12-gauge shells. Below this pair of barrels is a single-shot, pivot-reloaded grenade launcher. This grenade launcher is modular, and can be replaced with a small flamethrower attachment, although Samael rarely does so.

Samael's weapon is his pride and joy, and he responds poorly to the idea of anyone else using, modifying, or in fact even holding it. While Bitt Player could use his authority to force Samael to hand the rifle over to someone else, Bitt refuses to do so, as Samael's attachment to his weapon is another rare demonstration of independent thought.

Samael has been known to modify or replace parts of his weapon, which seems to be highly modular. It is not clear how much of the firearm, if any, is original.
