Background

After the Rikti War, Sister Psyche was forced to mind-ride Aurora Borealis in order to survive. Her body, in the mean time, was basically in a coma after depleting her powers. During this time her body stayed in Independence Port's Hospital attended by many nurses and doctors. One of those nurses, was Travis Devlin.

As her body started to mend, and her stay in Aurora started to draw to a close, a powerful Nictus had gotten the idea that it should attempt to eliminate Sister Psyche while it still had the chance. You see, Sister Psyche had evicted this particular Nictus from its host just prior to the Rikti War... and he still harbored a grudge from having to reside in lesser hosts and Cyst Crystals thereafter. It was an indignity that he would not soon forget.

Enter, Dusklight

Travis went to the hospital like he did on any other weekday morning to work his shift. For the most part, nothing seemed odd at all. Well, except that one of his shoelaces broke before he left the house. His mother always told him that was bad luck... but until the events that would come later, he never really had cause to believe it.

Travis went about his rounds as usual, but when he got to Ms. Tilman's room that day, something seemed amiss. He began to check her vital signs when—

A coldness, unlike anything that Travis had ever felt swept across his body, and suddenly, he felt like he was being pushed backward. But, when he looked down at his chest, nothing was there. And still, he was being pushed even now. It was a sensation so alien that he had no other way to describe it. Soon, he realized that something else was inside his head attempting to wrest control of his body from him. Travis screamed, but no sound came out.

At that moment, Travis felt his hands (in truth that was barely true at this point) move to his pocket to extract his Swiss Army knife and open the blade. Instantly, Travis knew what the being who now inhabitted his body meant to do. With all of the might in his mind, he resisted... and it amounted to the smallest tremor in his left hand.

Of course, Dusklight was not referring to the meager affront Travis was able to present on his own, but instead to a far more powerful resistance. It would seem, that Sister Psyche herself had split a portion of her mind to protect her body from harm and was using her vast psychic ability to help Travis resist. Soon, Travis was back in control of his own body again, and Dusklight had been confined to the back of his mind. Split as her focus was, she was not able to help Travis evict Dusklight completely, but she did help him to seal away the invading mind.

The attack on Sister Psyche had been thwarted, and it wasn't long from this event that she left Aurora and was able to return to her own body. When she did so, the tiny echo of her mind left Travis as well.

Resurfacing

With no assistance in maintaining the cage in which Dusklight had been locked in, it slowly eroded after a time. Soon, Dusk was able to see a way out, and he was relentless in making that passage viable... and since he had nothing else to focus his energies on, the process went pretty quickly.

By now, thoughts began to insert themselves into Travis thinking and he was eventually persuaded to quit nursing and move to the Rogue Isles. It was there, once Travis had set up an apartment in Cap au Diable that Dusklight finally felt he was safe enough to fully come forward and reassert his domination of Travis's mind.

Now, Travis resides in the same dark hole in the back of his mind that Dusklight had dwelt in. And, unfortunately for Travis, Dusklight is far better at maintaining that barricade.

Metagame Information

This section pertains to out-of-game information and is included for the benefit of the reader, or to include other OOC information.

Dusklight began his life in a failed excursion into the world of a themed weekly RP team with folks I didn't know from the forums. The idea was that you would create a character based on the Freedom Phalanx, but from a different reality in which their powers and/or personality manifested differently. In my case, I used Sister Psyche and took the idea that she was mind-riding a male Warshade.

Eventually the team fizzled, but my liking of the concept and costume sure didn't. So, he was reborn as a Warshade (sans the Sister) duoed with a Peacebringer who were both going to become villains. Once we got them to 20+ and switched to red-side our determination waned and now he sits... waiting for me to get motivated to play him some more.
