A Memoir?
You might say I have been through a lot in my life... though compared to some of the folks I have worked with, I don't know how accurate that is. Or rather, I might have gotten through things a bit more sanely than others.
Of course, that still doesn't tell you much, does it? Come to think of it, I have no idea why I decided to write down this little insight into my mind, perhaps... someday... it will be something that I can expand on into a memoir, when I am famous, powerful, and feared. Go ahead and scoff, I don't need your approval, now do I? Of course I don't!
Woah! Starting to tangent a bit there, let me get down to a bit about my past.
The Past
From the day I was born, it was obvious to everyone that I was different. My skin was a sickly grayish shade that had my parents and doctor worried from the start. I spent a lot of my childhood (even before I could remember it) between doctors trying to figure out what was wrong with me. Nobody could find anything.
Of course they couldn't! Somehow it never occurred to anyone that I might be a mutant. How this is possible in a city like Paragon City I will never truly understand. Only thing that I can figure, is denial on the part of my parents who already had a "normal" son. And as for the doctors? Had to be greed and nothing else. My parents were a cash cow to them, they were willing to do almost anything to get me "normal." And I spent a good deal of time convinced that I was broken and "not right" and needed to have something change about me for them to love me. Yeah, awful introspective, wasn't I? Surprised that someone you could refer to as a "villain" could be that aware of himself? Pffft. There you go with assumptions (something I am very well acquainted with).
At any rate, when I hit the ripe old age of sixteen, my powers, which had been dormant until then, went into overdrive. I began to secrete what I started calling bio-metal years later. I've never had it analyzed chemically, but I know for a fact that it is at least as hard as impervium! Anyway that isn't really the point. The point is that sometimes I would wake up encased in metal, a condition that my already rather weary parents would have completely lost it over. So, I did my best to hide my "problem," even from my brother.
Training
Everything changed when I met a guy in College (my lab partner in chemistry oddly enough) who became perhaps my first true friend. It would have been rather cliché had he been a mutant as well, but he wasn't. Just a "normal" dude who had ambition, and didn't judge a book by its cover. He and I spent a lot of time experimenting with my abilities. Everything from merely controlling the bio-metal my body created, to using it to shield me, and increase my strength. It wasn't long, before he was firing bullets at me and convincing me to try and fly (I had joked around once when I made wings like Archangel). As it turns out, I was able to pull off all of that and more!
My buddy... I just realized that I never told you guys his name. It was Zach Harrington. I called him Rusty though, because he looked like one of the Venture Brothers a bit... well, not really, but it stuck anyway. Of course, those astute about it would know that Rusty isn't even one of the brothers, which, to us, made the nickname even funnier.
What was I talking about, again? Oh yeah! Rusty and I eventually decided that we should plan something to really test my abilities, like stopping criminals or robbing a bank or something. Whatever it was, being in Paragon City made us immediately think of costumed heroes and villains, I mean, how could it not?
The Heist?
Rusty and I started to listen to the police scanner channels all the time, hoping that we'd hear about something interesting going on. On one rather unremarkable Tuesday, we heard that a guy named Mangle was in the process of robbing a bank not that far from the college we were at.
We looked at each other, and the gleam in our eyes must have been pretty dang bright! Rusty grabbed his keys and we rushed to the location. Due to how close we were, we got there just ahead of the cops, but must have missed Mangle himself, 'cause when I walked in, the bank folks thought that I was there to finish the job he started! It wasn't more than a minute later when the cops burst in, and all of the excuses and pleading I could do never convinced them I was there to stop the robber, not steal anything!
You might be asking about Rusty at this point... my driver and sidekick extraordinaire? Heh! He is the first person I grew to hate! Even more than the parents who lavished their love on me conditional to the fact that I pretended to be as normal as possible. More so than the brother who never understood me or tried to comfort me. The brother who I envied so much that I didn't even know it. I hated Rusty because he left me there, stranded in police custody and disappeared! He never came forward later when the story of my arrest hit the paper, he never answered his phone when my lawyer called, and he never visited me when I was in the pen for a crime I had nothing to do with!
Needless to say, I was pissed.
In the Zig
I spent a lot of time in the Zig, incarcerated for bank robbery. My ol' pal I never heard from again. And Mangle? I finally met him in there too, that'd be how I figured out it was him who I took the rap for that day.
You know how some people claim that prison only teaches criminals to be better at it? How it doesn't really work and almost never rehabilitates anyone? Holy crap are they right! I learned a lot in there about survival, about betrayal of trust, about how a mutant has to be his own man. And most importantly, that ambition and strength can get you what you want. Now that I have done my time, I strive to be feared... I long to be the villain who can do whatever I want, allegiant to no one. Because, ultimately, I am the only one that I can rely on.

This character began life as a part of a RP group on Guardian that ran for quite some time... well, enought to go from 1 to 41 at least. Eventually, a good deal of the potential storyline that could be told with those characters was told, and we as a group drifted away from them. So, Operative Bulwark, as he was called then, gathered dust for a good long while.
Once the Server Transfers began to stack up, I felt like I should rescue him to a server I play on more, so that he can finish his journey to 50. Since he was going to be losing his ties to the old SG, I felt removing the "Operative" and giving him a name change would be appropriate. Therefore, when he migrated to Justice (to move from Vigilante to Villain) he became Metalshift. At the moment, I am thinking of ways to modify his costume.
