"Very well, sir, I think we are very close to a working prototype," states Dr. Orvis, his excitement palpable.

"Good.  It has been a while since I was able to communicate anything positive happening in this facility at all.  You and your colleagues, Orvis, have been most disappointing."

Dr. Orvis looks a bit uneasy and mumbles under his breath about the working conditions and the fact that he and all his colleagues have been abducted... which tends to hamper morale.

 +
"What was that, Orvis?  Do you have something to say to me?" Archon Maurillo says confrontationally.
 +

 +
"No, Archon Maurillo, nothing to say at all," replies Dr. Orvis.  "However, I would ask that you give me a few days to assure that everything is working within expected tolerances before we move further.  This... process... well, it is rather delicate, and has never been attempted before.  There are so very many things that could go wrong, probably a good deal more than the ones we have planned for even."
 +

 +
"A few days?  A few '''days'''?!?" spits Archon Maurillo incredulously, "Do you think we are made of time, doctor?  I have my superiors breathing down my neck for results on at least '''something''' in this building or they plan to liquidate '''all''' of our positions.  I, for one, will not let that happen.  And that means that '''you''' and your doctor friends are on the strictest of schedules.  Arakhn herself plans to make a visit soon... so we had best have '''something''' to show them."

Dr. Orvis quivers a bit as he says, "Arakhn?!?  '''Here!'''"

"Yes.  Here.  I will be back in one hour.  You had better have a test ready for me then."

"Enough.  One hour."

Archon Maurillo storms out of the lab just as forcefully as he entered it.  Dr. Orvis turns from him looking entirely defeated.  He approaches the terminal he had been working at to attempt to get the Voidcyst Project's prototype operational.  He sighs heavily... it will be a long-shot at best, but he has no choice.

The Deadline

"Dr. Orvis!" yells Archon Maurillo as he enters the laboratory, "How are you progressing on this... Voidcyst Project of yours?"

"What was that, Orvis? Do you have something to say to me?" Archon Maurillo says confrontationally.

"A few days? A few days?!?" spits Archon Maurillo incredulously, "Do you think we are made of time, doctor? I have my superiors breathing down my neck for results on at least something in this building or they plan to liquidate all of our positions. I, for one, will not let that happen. And that means that you and your doctor friends are on the strictest of schedules. Arakhn herself plans to make a visit soon... so we had best have something to show them."

Dr. Orvis quivers a bit as he says, "Arakhn?!? Here!"

"Yes. Here. I will be back in one hour. You had better have a test ready for me then."

"I will do my best sir, but I really must stress that—"

"Enough.

One hour later...

Void Spectrum began life as a crystal not unlike this one.

"Ready, doctor?"

"I believe so, Archon Maurillo... at least as ready as it is ever going to be considering the schedule," replies Dr. Orvis.

"Good enough, then. Let's get this started, shall we?"

Dr. Orvis puts his safety goggle down over his eyes and walks into the control booth to the console there. He begins typing commands, flipping switches and assessing read-outs. As he does this, Archon Maurillo joins him in the booth. In the laboratory connected to this control booth, a containment chamber is lowered around a Shadow Cyst Crystal and arms are lowered into position equipped with lasers, and gas dispersion canisters.

"Okay, Maurillo," ventures Dr. Orvis, "I think we might just be ready. Shall I begin?"

"Yes. Were you waiting for an invitation?"

"Very well then." Dr. Orvis presses a button, and slides one last dial from 0 to 10. The lasers begin to hum and emit a bright red beam at the crystal. Once the crystal begins to glow brightly with that same red light, the gas canisters open and a purple-ish black cloud obscures the inside of the containment chamber.

"Okay... I think we are ready for the 'volunteer,'" Dr. Orvis nods to one of his assistants who scurries off to bring in the Void Hunter who has been selected for the procedure.

A Void Hunter is rolled into the main laboratory strapped down to a chair much resembling an electric chair, in fact. He is placed near to the Shadow Cyst's containment chamber. A few wires and tubes are connected from the fittings on the chair to those on the containment chamber... and the other ends are secured to the Void Hunter himself. The assistant gives a thumbs up to the control booth and Dr. Orvis flicks a few switches. In a moment, exhaust fans hum and the gas clears... and the lasers are switched off. Finally, an electric current is passed through the Void Hunter and into the Shadow Cyst Crystal. After the Void Hunter has ceased kicking and screaming, the containment chamber around the crystal is lifted out of the way.

What is left in the lab, aside from the corpse, both astonishes Maurillo and casts fear deep into the pit of Dr. Orvis's stomach. A humanoid form stands before the pair formed completely of what was once a Shadow Cyst Crystal (not to mention the essence of the departed Void Hunter). When it turns its head and regards the control booth... Maurillo and Orvis exchange an uneasy glance. When the prototype Voidcyst launches itself through the control booth's window, the pair don't even have a chance to scream.

The Voidcyst tears through the facility deep beneath Galaxy City, gutting many of the Council soldiers and scientists within. Finally, the Voidcyst reaches the final set of doors to the outside world. Charging at full speed up the corridor leading to that door is a detachment of Council soldiers and Void Hunters who have been tasked with retrieving the soon to be escaped and renegade experiment.

Once it makes it through that last set of doors, it ventures into the ruins and chaos that is left of Galaxy City. It serves as the perfect cover for giving those soldiers pursuing it the slip. And as it does so, it notices a vulnerable hero up ahead that could well serve to give it a somewhat more human visage...

Metagame Information

This section pertains to out-of-game information about Void Spectrum and is included for the benefit of the reader, or to include other OOC information.

This character was thought of based on suggestions in a forum thread, and my own cogitations based thereupon. What I came up with, is a character I am very pleased with in terms of concept. I hope that the appearance I have come up with does the concept justice. Further, I am excited to make use of some of the T9 VIP costume bits that I have just recently unlocked... namely the crystalline bits from the Fire and Ice Pack.
