Background

Born in the heart of the Sahara, Malik Al-Azanti, was part of a tribe of desert nomads. And, there he thought he would stay until the end of his days. However, fate it seems, had different plans for him.

One evening, after dusk, the leader of his tribe bid him to go into the night from the safety of camp to patrol the area around their encampment. Malik knew not why, but he obeyed. After midnight, with the desert moon riding high, he saw a flash of light from the corner of his eye. He looked around bewildered, and then looked up... a shadow had befallen the moon, which was something of a bad omen. Malik suddenly felt compelled to continue to gaze at the moon. He held his staff above his head and was transfixed by the moon and it's odd shadow.

Hours passed while Malik stood motionless. Again, there was a flash of light, but this time, instead of it appearing just out of sight, it came from all around him! It was as if his own body had given off the light.

When the sun began to rise at his back, he awoke from his trance with no memory of why he had stood in the dessert so. When he returned to camp near morning, he found that everyone in it was dead. Each and every member of the tribe had been rendered into a pile of dust, with only some bone fragments and metal objects surviving. Malik was shocked, and had no idea what to make of this bizarre scene. He had never heard of such an occurrence, even in the stories and myths of the older nomads in his band.

Malik, ever the survivor, gathered what supplies he could and set off toward the nearest oasis he knew of. That evening, when Malik made camp still a day's walk from the oasis, he fell into a far deeper sleep than he had ever known. This evening, a shadow befell the moon yet again, and another flash of light surrounded him. When Malik awoke this time, he was not in the desert at all, he was on Scylla Island, one of the islands off the shore of Talos Island in Paragon City! After the initial shock of this dislocation wore off, he began to learn that these powers that he had deemed of some mystical source outside his control, were actually powers that had been granted to him! He found that he could traverse great distances in the blink of an eye, he could manipulate energies to protect his body, and even his trusty walking staff was imbued with power.

He could only think that the shadow that had been cast across the moon that night he had spent patrolling the dunes was the cause of all of this. Like many in Paragon City, he interpreted this sudden surge of power as a sign that he should defend those who were defenseless as a way to atone for the deaths of his band, an occurrence he still blames on himself. He started to call himself: the Duneshadow!

Metagame Information

This section pertains to out-of-game information and is included for the benefit of the reader, or to include other OOC information.

Duneshadow will be re-made as soon as Staff Fighting comes out. His costume struck me, almost fully formed (colors and all) from looking at the Circle of Thorns hood! From that point on, I needed to figure out how to use the costume. Finally I struck upon the idea of him being Middle Eastern, and his real name sprang into my mind... it was not soon after that his code-name occurred to me. In the meantime, he waits.
