The Poem

Note: This poem was written by @Thirty-Seven and is entitled, Soulburnt.

Upon the altar the tools were lain;
Of pain, of tears for blood — disdain.

His corpse enchained and twice concealed
Of want, of ash from char — revealed.

Not a life it has to ponder,
yet it shall forever wander
actions cross, its mind asunder,
yearlong and endless: soulburnt.

Background

Alexei and Vynca were inseprable all through school. It was indeed, a storybook romance. But, even more than Alexei loved Vynca, Vynca loved Alexei. In fact, it would be safe to say that she was somewhat obsessed with him, she more or less defined herself as being with him, and being a part of his life.

The happy couple relocated from their family homes in Shroud City, and moved to the home that was to become their first home as man and wife, for they planned to marry within the year. The Imperial City was beautiful, and so they were glad to live in it. However, on the way home from work one day, only a mere week from their nuptials, Alexei died of an undiagnosed heart condition.

Vynca was destroyed. There really is no other way to put it than that. She had defined herself by their relationship, and bereft that piece she felt like less than half a person.

One evening, on her walk home from the cemetary in which Alexei was interred, she had a sudden flash of memory, just a sliver of one... she saw the lock on her mother's old chest that was now stored in her attic. And for the first time in weeks, the stone of gloom and depression that had set upon her life lifted a tiny bit. It was as if that sliver of memory had pierced the gloom like a sunbeam through the clouds after a storm. Her head was held high as she all but skipped home.

Once she got to her attic and saw the long forgotten chest, a gigantic tide of memories washed over her. Memories and knowledge that had been withheld from her these many years since she was a child. Her parents had, in an attempt to extinguish their connection to gypsies, fortune-tellers and sorcerers in the empire of Praetoria (where magic was more than frowned upon), had placed a spell upon young Vynca making all that she had seen and all the knowledge she was bound to inherit due to her bloodline into a mystery. All of that came crashing upon her that evening.

She spent days pouring through the tomes, artifacts and scattered notes within the chest... and as she did, she felt more and more alive. The dormant magic that flowed through her veins was finally coming alive. Eventually, she found the sort of ritual that she needed, and knew that it was precisely her way back to the happiness she knew before Alexei's death.

Vynca gathered the materials she would need and set them up in one of the lesser used mausoleums in the cemetary. She drew the runes upon the floor, lit the candles and made her blessings to the points of the compass, she spread the iron chains in the required pattern and lastly... she laid her lover's corpse upon them and began the encantation. Soon the flames of the candles turned a brilliant emerald green and swept inward toward the body. The corpse and the chains were alight in a ghostly fire, and Vynca was very pleased.

When the ritual was completed, the soul of her departed love was bound to the chains, and the chains were now bound to the corpse some being reforged into armor. Finally, Vynca was happy, and her Alexei was reborn... not as he was, but as he could be forever.

Now, Alexei exists as a shell of what he once was... his mind is mostly gone, his body is burnt and scarred, but he lives to protect Vynca from anything that should threaten her, and he is immortal... which brings her great comfort.

Metagame Information

This section pertains to out-of-game information and is included for the benefit of the reader, or to include other OOC information.

Essentially, he is the Praetorian version of Geistlos, except with Kinetic Melee and Fiery Aura (two sets I hope to play more). Soulforged died, and had his soul bound to the armor and chains that he wears by his crazy sorceress fiancée at the time. He is somewhat of an automaton... and is scarred permanently by the fact that the chains and armor were essentially forged around his corpse!

Soulforged began life as a poem I got inspiration to write called "Soulburnt" and that became his bio when he was made into a character of the same name. That character had a horrid costume, and became one that I just wasn't attached to. As such, he fell into disuse, and was shelved indefinitely. Later, I tweaked the poem, created a backstory that is told in his fiancée's bio and became Soulforged.

The most interesting (and disturbing) part of this character, to me, is picturing the exact ritual that his fiancée at the time performed... she litterally took his soul, bound it to chains and armor and put them onto her lover's corpse while they were still nearly molten. The smell must have been intense.
