Background
Jane St. Claire was raised in a loving English upper-class family. Excelling at school, she was accepted to Oxford University . One day she was researching information for a project deep within the bowels of an ancient Oxford University library. She came across a hidden antechamber full of magic tomes. Upon entering the chamber, the entrance closed behind her. She disappeared for three years.
During this time, which passed as no more than a few days for her, she read and absorbed the information found in the chamber. The magic was ancient pagan and proto-Christian mysticism, gathered by Merlin himself to ward Briton from the latent and active magical energies unleashed by the Mu/Orangbagan wars of ancient days.
When she emerged, she was one of the most powerful witches in Great Britain, taking up the name The Dark Saint. Seeking more control and experience, she abandoned her academic pursuits and came to the United States, to learn from the legendary magic users of Paragon City.
Intrigued by Infernal's demon binding, Dark Saint took it upon herself to see if she could do the same. In a dangerous ritual using latent magical energy from the Banished Pantheon, she called open a portal to Hell. Much to her surprise, a freak vibrational instability, brought about by a gravitational wormhole created in the same spot in another dimension by the superhero GR3731-O69, pulled her, her Hell portal, and two demons that she had just summoned into the other dimension.
GR3731-O69 (or "Gretal") and her teammates had just completed a battle against the Banished Pantheon when Dark Saint suddenly appeared before them, along with the Hell portal and the demons. With some difficulty, the team, also consisting of House Of Emerald Strumpets members Crystal Quartz, Griffe, Lady of the Evening, and The Unstoppable A-Train managed to subdue one of the demons long enough for Dark Saint to recover from her surprise at being yanked into another dimension and magically bind the demon.
That demon, now bound to her service, is now known as Pale Devil, and begrudgingly uses his powers in service to Dark Saint, and by extension, Paragon City and the House Of Emerald Strumpets. Although the binding was a success and Pale Devil has been an excellent demon servant, Dark Saint has not elected to attempt another demon binding ritual. Instead she has been tracking down the other that was summoned but escaped in the confusion, the so-called Devil Of Mercy.
Current Status
Dark Saint is one of the rare magical heroes in the House Of Emerald Strumpets, and is often consulted when the House faces magical foes. Despite being a fine combat witch, Dark Saint still prefers the rigors of academic pursuits, and spends most of her time trying to expand her magical knowledge and prowess, and will often send Pale Devil to handle the superhero "heavy lifting".
