Ouroboros Portal:Article Guidelines

Subject Matter

Adult Material

City of Heroes is rated T for Teen. This roughly corresponds to PG-13, which is a little more lenient than T for Teen and the guidelines that Ouroboros Portal will be using for text content. PG-13, in a nutshell, allows the following:

  • sexual content (but no actual sex acts)
  • some strong language and innuendo
  • mature themes
  • political themes
  • terror
  • intense action violence
  • drug references

Images uploaded to the Ouroboros Portal should be suitable for a T for Teen game, not a PG-13 movie. No nudity or partial nudity, no sexual content, no overt drug use. A good rule of thumb: if the Official Forums wouldn't allow it, neither will Ouroboros Portal.

Note: Inclusion of adult articles and images may be revisited in the future when there is a higher population of users on the Portal.

Illegal Activities

Child pornography is not allowed to be hosted here, nor linked to from here. Content that promotes, incites, or advocates hate, violence, or discrimination based on race, national origin, gender, sexuality, or religion is not allowed to be hosted or linked to.

Articles that refer to illegal activities are fine so long as they do so within PG-13 guidelines.

If any individual sees an article that they feel blatantly exceeds the guidelines, they must raise the concern (with explanation) on the article's talk page. If the person with the concern and the person who posted the content cannot come to an agreement on how to proceed, then an admin gets drafted in to help settle the dispute. Outside of that, admins only directly intervene in cases where things are clearly out of bounds.

Article Names

Character Articles

Name conflict resolution is found below.
  • Character bio pages should be created in the main namespace, in the form of Character Name (Server Name), like the following:
  • A redirect should be created at the serverless page, pointing to the server-included page, like the following:

Supergroup Articles

Name conflict resolution is found below.

Fiction Articles

Name conflict resolution is found below.
Fan Canon
Fan canon means that a person or group of people have created their own story lines that may diverge from the official story of the game. This can include anything from a signature character having children, to an alternate dimension, to completely ignoring the game story and coming up with new content from the ground up.
  • Fan Canon articles do no utilize a parenthesized flag upon initial creation, only upon naming conflicts.
    • Fan Canon articles utilize the (Fiction) flag upon naming conflict.
  • If a piece of Fan Canon fiction pertains to only a single character, utilize the "Character Stories" guidelines instead.
Character Stories
Character Stories can contain fan canon or true game story lines, or both.
  • Character Stories should be placed in the subspace of the character page itself, such as Character Name (Server Name)/Story Name.
  • Character Stories should not need naming conflict conventions, as they pertain to only a single character.
Mission Architect Story Arcs
MA Story Arcs are stories that can be found within the Mission Architect system in-game. MA Story Arcs can contain fan canon or true game story lines, or both.
  • MA Story Arcs should be named the same as their in-game title.
  • MA Story Arcs do not utilize a parenthesized flag upon initial creation, only upon naming conflicts.
    • MA Story Arcs utilize the (AE #####) flag upon naming conflict. The number is the arc ID.
  • Format new informational templates based on the {{The Wretch's Gift}} and {{The Wretch's Gift Nav}} templates, changing pertinent information to reflect the new template.
  • New templates should be created based on the name of the story arc in question.
    • The page-top template should be Template:Story Arc Name and the page-bottom template should be Template:Story Arc Name Nav.
    • Assistance creating these templates can be had by asking at the forums or on an admin's talk page.
  • MA Story Arcs should be placed in Category:Mission Architect Story Arcs. If they are a Developer's Choice, add Category:Developer's Choice Story Arcs. If they are Hall of Fame, add Category:Hall of Fame Story Arcs.

Global Handles

  • While not required, players can create their own global handle page, in the form of @Global Handle, like the following:
  • It should be a redirect, pointing either to the player's user page, or to a character with whom they identify most.
  • It should be included in the category Global Handles.

See Category:Global Handles for an explanation of the wiki code to accomplish this.

Name Conflicts

The inevitable happens: Characters, supergroups, fictional stories, and/or MA Story Arcs having the same name are created on the Ouroboros Portal. The steps to overcome confusion are as follows:

  1. Change the serverless page from a redirect into a disambiguation page.
    • Include links to all entities that share the name, including their informational flags, like the following:
  2. Create the new character(s) or supergroup(s) using the naming guidelines above: Characters, Supergroups, and Fiction.
  3. Add a link to the disambiguation page at the top of each similarly-named article:
  4. Add one of the following templates to the bottom of all disambiguation articles:
    • {{disambig character}} - If all entries are characters, use this one.
    • {{disambig supergroup}} - If all entries are supergroups, use this one.
    • {{disambig MA}} - If all entries are MA Story Arcs, use this one.
    • {{disambig fic}} - If all entries are Fan Canon fictional articles, use this one.
    • {{disambig multi}} - If entries include characters, supergroups, Fan Canon fiction, and/or MA Story Arcs, use this one.
    • {{disambig}} - If none of the above apply, use this one.

Note: If a character is named the same as an in-game entity, place the following template at the top of the page to inform the viewer:

Editing Others' Articles

  • Do not edit grammar or spelling in other people's articles unless requested by the author.
  • Mission Architect arcs belong to the author: do not edit them without permission.
  • Do not edit character biographies that do not belong to you unless there has been a name conflict, inserting the appropriate templates as listed above in the Name Conflict section.

Authors and supergroup leaders: if you would like to request copy editing or proofreading of your articles, indicate so on that talk page of the article. Please be specific with who can edit (anyone, supergroup members only, players of characters mentioned in the article, administrators only, etc.)

  • Links should not be used in headings.
  • Avoid using Heading Level One (=Heading=) in the body of an article per general Wiki Policy.
