Background
In July of 1990, a mother left her five-year-old daughter sitting on a sidewalk in Jamestown, Rhode Island, telling the child she had to go somewhere, and would return shortly. Eleven years and nineteen foster homes later, she was found in Cranston by Beckett Alteridem, who immediately recognized her potential ability to use Force of Will, and offered her a chance to join the Alteridem Foundation.
The girl, now 16, was a bitter and jaded person, who seemed to hate everyone and very especially despised her parents; the father she never knew and the mother who abandoned her. She also hated her own name, as her parents had given it to her. It was Beck who suggested she call herself Lorelei. The addition of Nachtigall as a surname came when she registered with the FBSA. Lorelei's original name has faded to obscurity, not even Beckett knows what it is, despite the pair's romantic attachment.
In addition to her Force of Will abilities, Lorelei demonstrated a talent for magic, being able to draw dark energy from the Netherworld to her hands. Because of this, Lorelei was apprenticed to the ever-eccentric Chihiro-san, who continues to train her in the arts of magic, in addition to educating Lorelei on her unique, yet insightful, view of the world.
Current Status
Lorelei Nachtigall is still living with and learning from Chihiro-san, and is a self-identified witch, as well as one of the Alteridem Foundation's front-line fighters. Lorelei was tapped by the Midnight Squad as a troubleshooter, but she only works for them sporadically. Lorelei has taken it upon herself to resolve Salamanca's mystical crisis. She often fights alongside Beckett and his sisters, or else other members of the Foundation.
Lorelei is engaged to Beckett Alteridem, although they haven't set a date for the wedding yet. She has suggested that they just disappear for a while, rather than deal with the media attention that tends to follow hero weddings.
Personality
Sarcastic, negative, and antisocial, Lorelei nevertheless has a strong sense of justice and a heavy dislike for evildoers. She has a snide comment for every situation, and an insult for every person. Lorelei does have a softer side, although it's almost exclusively seen only when Beck is present. Trying to convince Lorelei to discuss her parents is a very bad idea.
Lorelei loves Beckett Alteridem quite a bit, despite insulting his intelligence and sanity on a daily basis. The two are rarely apart, even in places where Beck wouldn't normally be welcome, such as the Midnight Club or amongst the Cabal. Lorelei has adopted Beck's hard-line attitudes regarding evil and justice, and is even more in the habit of saying exactly what she thinks, which usually isn't very nice.
Despite her constant griping, Lorelei is usually the one to start actions against villain groups, and enthusiastically takes every opportunity to fight evil. She is also constantly concerned with the plight of the civilians, which causes friction between herself an Salamanca's Cabal, even though she often works with them. Lorelei is highly motivated and willfull, though it's hard to see that through the cloud of wisecracks and dark commentary.
Magic is the primary target of Lorelei's deeply-hidden, but very strong, curiosity. She applies a lot of energy towards researching magic in all its forms, and frequently hunts out and raids Circle of Thorns libraries in search of knowledge. Lorelei also pursues new means of increasing her power, in order to better apply her ever-expanding understanding of matters arcane.
In combat, Lorelei prefers a direct approach. She uses her Force of Will for survival, and draws negative energy to herself to use for melee attacks. She can strike terror into her enemies by showing them glimpses of the Netherworld -often while asking if they want to see Hell- and tears away at the very souls of those who stand against her. She is very intense in battle, but usually leaves information-gathering to Beckett, lacking his ability to sense dishonesty.
From tiny kittens to grown tigers, Lorelei's fondness for felines borders on an obsession. This is only seen when she happens to be around them, however.
Powers and Abilities
Lorelei Nachtigall is one of only two known people who can utilize both magic and Force of Will, and until recently was believed to be the only still-living person with that capability. Lorelei's Force of Will gives her the ability to amplify her magic, as well as letting her rapidly regenerate after being injured. She uses her magic primarily for melee combat, but can apply it to other purposes, usually for finding things and people. Lorelei can also use her magic to fly, an ability she uses in and out of battle.
