Benita and Joshua Melendez
Melendez Nautics is a company that appears in the Mission Architect story arc Rise of the Fiend Girl,
founded and led by Joshua Melendez and Benita Melendez, the parents of Sonia Melendez.
Characters History
Mexican migrants Josué Meléndez Casales and Benita Quiñones Meléndez founded the company in 1993 in Utah;
however, they did not achieve success until a year later, when they learned English, simplified their names
and relocated to Paragon City. They soon became wealthy, and the Rikti War
did surprisingly little harm to them. Their daughter Sonia Aracelis Meléndez Quiñones was made an intern in spring 2007.
Spoiler warning: Details about story arcs or other content follow.
The company had actually been made successful by demons, to whom the couple had sold themselves and their belongings.
The humans were to fulfill their side of the deal upon their deaths, or after 13 years at the latest. When it was time
to pay, the demons took over their bodies, intending to keep the company. However, the humans had tried to betray them
by bringing in angelic heroes to protect them, whereupon the demons called their own allies, the
Circle of Thorns. Ultimately, the contract was deemed to be valid, but
the battle had revealed the demons to the public, making it all but impossible
for the company to operate any longer. Also, pending investigation of the incident, the family's possessions were
temporarily frozen, which allowed Sonia (whom the demons had unsuccessfully tried to claim as well) to continue
to live off it for a short while, until she struck her own controversial deal
with another infernal being.
